Understanding Color Through Harmony

Maree Christine | Honeyrock Harmony
Creator of the Color Harmony Method

For more than 45 years, Maree has worked with color in the beauty and design industries.
She began her career as a hairdresser in Australia before working in London salons during the vibrant creative scene of the 1980s. Returning to Australia, Maree went on to become a Technical Advisor for Wella and later worked with leading Italian color companies, training stylists and educating professionals in the art and science of hair color.
Throughout her career, whether working behind the chair, developing products, or teaching in salons and colleges , one question kept resurfacing:
Over time I found myself asking the same question again and again.
Why is this made to seem so complicated?
More importantly, how can I help my clients make sense of it?
My words alone weren’t enough. I needed a way to help people see the bigger picture of color harmony , how colors actually relate to one another.
That search eventually led to a breakthrough.
Over time, something began to become clear.
Color harmony wasn’t really about fitting people into rigid seasonal categories. It was about understanding the relationships between colors — how tone, depth, and temperature interact.
But even the tonal systems I studied still seemed to be missing something.
Then one day the realization came almost like a revelation.
There weren’t six harmonies.
There were seven.
When those relationships were mapped more clearly, a seventh harmony appeared — a balanced spectrum that sits between the others, connecting them.
I called it Fresh.
Suddenly the system made sense in a whole new way.
From that moment, everything began to fall into place.
What had once felt complicated and fragmented became something far simpler — a way of understanding color through harmony rather than rigid categories.
That insight eventually became The Color Harmony Method™.
Maree began her career in hairdressing in 1980 in Armidale, NSW, training in a university-town salon under the guidance of her boss (and aunty) Suzie.
Suzie had worked in leading salons and was deeply committed to education. She brought that standard into the salon — creating an environment where learning, precision, and creativity mattered.
The salon was a mix of classic techniques and emerging trends — from shampoo and sets through to modern cuts (mohawks were popular :) and creative colour.
But more than that, it was a place where training was taken seriously.
Suzie regularly brought in educators from Sassoon, Toni & Guy, Pivot Point, and leading Australian stylists — something that was rare at the time.
That early experience shaped how Maree would approach her own work.
Not just doing colour…
but understanding it, teaching it, and continuing to refine it.
By the mid-1980s Maree was working in London salons, before returning to Australia where she later became a Technical Advisor for Wella.
Over the following decades she worked with international color brands, taught professional education programs, and eventually opened her own salon and cosmetic line.
Across thousands of consultations and years of teaching color, Maree began noticing something traditional color systems struggled to explain:
Many people simply did not fit neatly into existing color categories.
"Over time Maree realised that what many people needed was not another category, but a clearer way to understand how color harmony actually works."

After years of consultations and teaching color, Maree began to notice a recurring pattern.
Some clients sat comfortably within existing seasons or harmonies; clear, soft, warm, cool, light, or deep.
But others seemed to sit somewhere between those categories.
Their harmony was balanced.
Not strongly warm or cool.
Not strongly bright or muted.
Not strongly light or deep.
Maree saw the same pattern in herself and in that moment, something clicked.
She had finally found her own harmony.
That discovery became the seed of what is now known as Fresh, the balanced harmony at the center of the Color Harmony Method.
This discovery became the missing link that allowed the full framework of the 7 Color Harmony Spectrums to emerge. What Maree realised was ...
Today, Maree teaches stylists, consultants, and individuals how to understand color through harmony rather than rigid categories.
Through The Color Harmony Method™, she helps people see how tone, depth, and temperature interact — giving them innovative tools to recognise the seven natural spectrums of color harmony.
Instead of memorising seasons or relying on endless fabric flapping, clients learn something far more valuable: how to develop an eye for harmony and choose colors with confidence.
